A Trans Girl's Guide to a Night Out in London

So you fancy a night out.

Maybe you've just moved to London. Maybe you've lived here for ages but always stuck to the same safe corner. Maybe you're visiting, you've got one free evening, and you want to spend it somewhere you can properly be yourself. Either way, you're staring at a map of a very big city wondering where a trans girl is actually meant to go.

Good news. London has more answers to that question than almost anywhere on earth. The trick is knowing which door to walk through, because "London's queer scene" isn't one place, it's about five different vibes scattered across the city, and turning up to the wrong one for your mood is the only real way to get it wrong.

Start in Soho if you want it easy

It's tiny, cosy and feels safe, with drag king karaoke, DJ nights at the weekend and a genuinely lovely crowd. If you want somewhere you can walk in on your own and not feel like the odd one out, this is a brilliant first stop.

Head east for the coolest, queerest crowd

Cross town to Dalston and Hackney and you're in a completely different London. This is where the younger, more alternative, most genuinely trans-inclusive corner of the scene lives, and it's the bit a lot of people end up loving most.

Dalston Superstore is the anchor. It's a cafe by day and a queer club by night, doing everything from drag brunch to late, sweaty dancefloors, and it runs a regular trans community space, so you're not just tolerated there, you're the point. It's about as friendly and unpretentious as a night out gets.

A little further into Hackney, La Camionera is a lovely, laid-back sapphic bar with a garden, run by a trans-masc owner and a firm favourite for a more chilled evening of drinks and good chat. Somewhere to actually hear each other, rather than shout over a bassline.

Save Vauxhall for a proper late one

South of the river, Vauxhall is the home of the big, late nights. The star of the show is the Royal Vauxhall Tavern, a genuinely iconic queer venue that's been going since the Victorian era and is now a listed building. It hosts legendary cabaret, drag and club nights, pulls a mixed all-ages crowd, and has a warmth that's hard to describe until you're in the room.

This is the "we're making a night of it" option rather than the quiet-first-pint option. Save it for when you've found your feet a little and you're up for dancing late. And whatever you do, sort out how you're getting home before you go, more on that in a minute.

The real secret: follow the night, not just the venue

Here's the thing that took a lot of us far too long to work out. In London, the best queer nights are often events, not venues.

Because the crowd at any given bar changes completely depending on what's on that night, the single most useful habit is to check what's happening before you go, rather than just turning up somewhere and hoping. There's a whole world of brilliant one-off and regular nights, trans and dyke parties, femme nights, drag spectaculars, that move around different venues, and you find them by looking them up.

One gentle word, girl to girl, because it saves a bit of grief. A small handful of nights that advertise themselves around trans women can lean a bit chaser-heavy, the "trans women and their admirers" type of billing. Not your only option, and not the vibe most of us are after.

If what you want is community and a proper dance rather than being someone's night out, the community-run spaces and the queer nights above are where you'll be happiest. Dalston Superstore, She Soho, the RVT, a night you found on OutSavvy that just sounds fun. Trust your gut on the framing of an event, and you'll skip the ones that aren't for you.

The practical bits nobody warns you about

A few things that make a London night smoother.

You barely need cash. The whole city runs on contactless, so your card or phone will get you in and get you served almost everywhere.

It's not cheap, so brace your wallet. Expect a fair whack for a pint, more at the big club nights, and a cover charge at a lot of clubs, especially at weekends.

Sort your way home first, especially from a late one in Vauxhall. The night Tube runs on several lines on Fridays and Saturdays, which is a lifesaver, but Vauxhall winds down long after even that.
