Trans-Friendly Yorkshire: Leeds, Sheffield and York

Yorkshire doesn't shout about it, but it's one of the best parts of the country to be trans.

It's home to the biggest regular trans social in the UK. It has queer bookshops, community-run bars, trans-only swims and a Pride calendar that runs from York in late spring to Hull in the height of summer. It just doesn't all sit on one famous street, so you need to know where to look.

So whether you live here, you've just moved or you're coming for the weekend, here's where trans people, and the people who date them, can go and have a lovely time. Leeds is where it all happens

Leeds First Friday

Leeds First Friday is the UK's largest regular trans+ social, and it's been going for 18 years. On the first Friday of every month, trans, non-binary and gender-questioning people, along with their friends and allies, gather in the bars around Lower Briggate, the area locals call the Freedom Quarter. It's free, it's run by and for the community, and it's the easiest way to walk into a room full of people who get it.

If it's your first time, don't worry about turning up alone. The evening currently starts from 7pm at Queens Court, and the LFF website has a guide written specifically for newcomers. Plenty of regulars say the first visit is the nervy one, and every one after that feels like coming home.

The Lower Briggate bars

The rest of the month, the same streets still have plenty going on. Queens Court is the place for big pop anthems and a good outdoor terrace. Blayds Bar is tucked down an alleyway off Lower Briggate (mind the cobbles) and has been a friendly, great-value favourite for years. And The New Penny, the city's longest-running gay pub, has a blue plaque outside marking it as a safe venue for the LGBT community since 1953.

Wharf Chambers

Ask trans people in Leeds where to go and one name comes up first, almost every time. Wharf Chambers is a co-op run bar, music venue and community space near the Corn Exchange, with a clear safer spaces policy and a genuinely mixed crowd. Weekend nights in particular draw a good group of trans regulars who are happy to chat if you say hello.

One practical note: it's a members' club, so join on their website before you go. It's cheap and takes a couple of minutes.

Daytime and alcohol-free

Not everyone wants a bar, and Leeds is good for that too. Flamingos Coffee House in Central Arcade is an alcohol-free, LGBT+ friendly café that's also home to Pride Place, the city's LGBTQ+ community space. The Bookish Type is a trans-owned queer bookshop that runs events and queer history tours of the city, and it's a lovely, low-pressure place to lose an hour.

Community groups

TransLeeds is the peer-support charity at the centre of the city's trans community. Alongside its main monthly group, it runs separate groups for trans fem, trans masc and non-binary people, plus coffee mornings and board game socials. Sheffield does it the DIY way

Sheffield has lost a lot of its traditional gay bars over the years, but the scene that's grown in their place is warm, creative and community-run.

The centre of it is Gut Level on Chapel Walk, a queer-led bar, music venue and members' club that hosts everything from club nights to workshops, communal meals and darts tournaments. It secured long-term ownership of its building in 2026, so it's very much here to stay.

For something gentler, Trans Active runs weekly trans-only swimming sessions at Heeley Pool with private use of the whole pool, plus climbing, walks and other activities through the year. It's open to trans, non-binary and questioning adults of every fitness level, and the focus is on meeting people and having fun rather than racking up lengths.

York is quieter, and that's the point

York doesn't have a dedicated gay bar, and locals will tell you that's fine. The scene here is smaller and more low-key, built around cafés, bookshops and people who all seem to know each other.

Start at The Portal Bookshop on Patrick Pool, an LGBTQIA+ bookshop with a big soft spot for sci-fi and fantasy, and Over the Rainbow Café upstairs. York LGBT Forum runs a trans and non-binary support group from the café, along with regular trans socials across the city.

Put late spring in your diary. York Pride drew more than 17,500 people in 2025, and York Trans Pride celebrates trans joy with events made by and for the trans community. And if you ever fancy a bigger night out, Leeds is an easy train ride away.

Don't forget Hull

Hull is a proper night out that won't empty your wallet. Savile Street, just off Queen Victoria Square, is the city's LGBTQIA+ strip, with drag bars and friendly venues like Monroe's Bar. Trans locals describe the queer bars here as very trans positive.

Pride in Hull, usually held in late July, draws tens of thousands of people, and in 2025 it turned Queen Victoria Square into a dedicated Trans Square.

Over in Bradford, the collectively run 1 in 12 Club isn't a queer venue as such, but it's a welcoming, cheap and famously anti-fascist punk social centre that trans locals recommend.

A bit of local know-how

A few practical bits to make your visit smoother.

Leeds First Friday usually runs on the first Friday of the month, but dates shift around Leeds Pride and New Year, so check the website before you book a hotel or a train.

Join members' venues like Wharf Chambers and Gut Level before you go rather than trying to sort it at the door.

Yorkshire is more compact than it looks. Leeds is an easy train ride from both York and Sheffield, so a Leeds First Friday weekend works from almost anywhere in the county.
